Terrible Twos
Having moved back into the girls' barracks, at least the both of them had a place to sleep. Maohli was simply grateful for the fact that both of them had a similar sleeping pattern, and that Emeraldth was always kind enough to wait her turn. Jasperth certainly didn't. Maohli! I ITCH! the little male, (who was now gaining on twice his original size) pleaded.
"I know you itch, I know, stop wriggling around like that and I'll be able to help." Maohli was kneeling with him at his couch, a jar of the pleasantly scented oil in one hand, another rubbing furiously at one of his shoulders. The black-green dragonet was indeed wriggling around, trying to rub his hide against the couch and whatever else was close enough to scratch this particular discomfort away. "Stop it, Jasperth! You'll rub yourself raw! Do you want to look like herd-beast meat?" Maohli wiped a strand of loose hair away from her face, which was already streaked with oil.
No... but you're not working fast enough! What are you DOING?! he cried, eyes roiling at her withdrawn hand.
"If you don't stop rolling around like that, I'm going to get up and leave. Stay. Still." Maohli ordered. "You're was liable to break a wing if you keep leaning on it like that!"
"And you look really funny," Emeraldth interjected, crouching on her own couch beside him. Although her thoughts were enough to make Maohli scratch at herself, the green, who'd also grown, was keeping her discomfort quiet. "I think I saw something move like that once when Kimine dropped a sausage on the ground and it wouldn't stop bouncing around, only Opalth ate it."
Jasperth gave his sister a glare, but stilled himself enough that only his tail was lashing about. Maohli dipped her hand into the jar and went back to work.
Ohhh, right there... the black crooned as his bonded worked the oil into one scaly patch of hide. Nearly purring, he closed his inner set of eyelids, delighting in having his hide scratched. Suddenly he craned his neck again, eyes wide open and whirling. It moved! Maohli! It moveditmoveditmooooooooved!
The girl giggled. She followed the itching at the dragonets direction, chasing it all the way to his tailtip. "There, are you good yet?"
Jasperth paused, looking more then a little surprised. Yes... I think I am! He blinked once, twice, nuzzled her weary hand. Thanks, he said simply, then curled up and fell immediately asleep.
Maohli shook her head, grinning at her bond. "Alright, go to sleep. But you'd better be big and strong by the time I'm through with you." The black-green shifted his head a little in response. "Little scoundrel, he must have the thickest hide in the world. Worked my hand right down to the bone!"
"Seriously?" Emeraldth asked, more then a little woried.
"Oh no, not seriously. I guess you need an oiling too, huh?" Maohli shuffled over to the chubby green, flexing her already tired hand for another workout.
"I am a little itchy." the dragonet lifted a wing to reveal a particularly scaly patch right where the webbing met her side.
Maohli whistled under her breath. "Why didn't you say anything about that sooner? I would have done something about it!"
"I didn't want to make Jasperth upset again. He doesn't like it when I get something before he does," the dragonet replied. Maohli heaved a sigh, and got to work on the patch of hide. "You know what? You are way too nice for your own good. Why don't you say something to him?"
Emeraldth cocked her head, looking up at her bonded. "Why? He is the way he is.". She allowed a little croon to escape her muzzle as Maohli found and neutralized a particularly annoying spot.
"You know you're just as dear to me as he is, right?"
"Of course. Why would I think otherwise?"
At this Maohli paused, thinking of an appropriate answer. "Well... it's not that I mean to let him have everything first..."
"Don't worry, I understand." Emeraldth bared her teeth in a draconic grin. "I'm just happy that you let me have you, too."
Maohli giggled. "Yeah." She drifted off as she continued to oil the dragonet's patchy hide. The both of them were content to have a few moments of companionable silence.
