Hatching 17

Kaliinse's Clutch
----------------------------------

[Attention, all candidates are due to public hatching bay three. All candidates are due to public hatching bay three. Thank you.] The announcement had gone out across the space station--well at least it went out across the candidate-housing section. Across the lower levels, candidate and other public-service announcements only flashed across holoboards... magic or psionic broadcasts were wired to those who'd paid for the service and (if they weren't already set up for telepathic communications) the implants that such broadcasts required.

Any way it went, by the time that Kaliinse's clutch was thoroughly rocking, everyone who'd signed up to bond a dragon was there. This hatching would, hopefully, be over with quickly and efficiently, despite the fact that it was so much less orderly then the Old World clutch that had hatched before it! People simply had to show up, along with an Archivist to take a census of the new pairs, and of course a few Ministry workers to set up food and to deal out sponsorships, and that was that.

As if to reinforce the hoped-for simplicity, a single egg hatched just as the last candidate came sliding into place. A brightly coloured female stumbled from her cracked encasement, both pairs of wet wings spread for balance. She was a brilliant blue-teal colour, and her back was dusted with a slightly lighter shade of the same colour, like her father. She seemed to get her wits about her quickly enough, and was soon marching straight for the little house-cat, Dra'tia.
~My god, you're a piece of work,~ she said, leaning down to snort mucus-clogged nostrils at the prim creature.
"What's that supposed to mean?!" Dra'tia demanded, hissing, backing up a step. Her tail was as wide around as her belly, due to fluffed fur!
~I'm just saying you're going to need a lot of work. I'm Miiseas. I'll be your trainer, I figure.~
"Trainer! Well, I never--" But Dra'tia was already following her new bond to the food tables, more intrigued, now, then irritated.

The second dragonet to hatch was, surprisingly, a sooty black, and while his for was coloured as pale as snow, his hind was as dark as night! He crooned, looking up to his mother. ~I'm Iixeuth... and I think I'd rather be going with you, mother.~ Of course, he had to repeat that message to the Archivist, seeing as how his original sending was on a private band.

Another dragonet, a female, had followed closely in the footsteps of her brother. She was dark green and, like Miiseas, was speckled with blue. She passed by the candidates altogether and, when the lowly Archivists stopped her, she simply said, ~I'm Shiiuu.~
Jigsaw tagged the name as it came up to her, and, as quick as pie, matched it up with Rath, a representative from Fire-Ridge. After organizing the sponsorship queue, the Ministry employee had everything all figured out... at least, for now. She'd alert the sponsor once the hatching was over.

Back amongst the hatching clutch, a pair of dragonets were getting their bearings. The first, a blue female, seemed to find what she was searching for. Latching on to Shrelle, Triium creeled her hunger, and, more importantly, her desire to get out of this stuffy old hatching bay!

The second hatchling was nearly the opposite as his darker coloured sister. Kiidum flounced about for a bit, sniffing at the rocking shells and shaking himself off, wagging his butt and acting like a typical little kid. Eventually he caught sight of Uumkdavsth and, intriuged, approached the older dragonet. ~Hi!~ said the brightly teal dragon. ~What're you so down about?~
~Mere words cannot express the echoing vastness that is my soul,~ the brown and green male replied, sighing deeply to emphasize his point.
Head cocked, Kiidum made a noise remarkable close to a bird-trill. ~That's too bad! Maybe some food would help?~
The partial hathian dragonet blinked. ~Sustinance for a mortal like yourself, but I? No, I could not bear it. My hunger reaches a level far deeper, as deep as my very core!~
~Oh! Well, that's something you must abhore.~ Kiidum cackled. ~Maybe a bond'll help, even if from some insignificant whelp, but still! I'll bond, if you will!~ He puffed up with pride. His first rhyme!
Uum' lowered his head. ~You need practice.~ And the pair trailed off together.

Tijger soon found himself being approached by yet another dragonet. Running a hand through white-streaked hair, he gave the hatchling a look... with its dark colouring, it was probably dark of heart.
~Not true!~ Laysiibath replied, snitching the thought right from the partial Nuit's mind. ~You can't judge a dragonet by their colour!~ He came right up to the young man, clasping his legs in a weak wing-armed hug. ~Come with me, and I'll give you reason to judge me on better grounds.~ Well... Tijger couldn't say no. Besides, he was interested to see if this dragonet was really what he said he might be... an actual kind-hearted soul!

~Ma'Draka?~ A small voice asked, just as the last three shells began to shatter. The powerful man, Ma'Draka, tilted his head, wondering which of the dragonets had spoken. It soon became apparent that it was the dark green that was heading towards him that had spoken... now he (the hatchling) stopped at the man's foot, baby-wide eyes huge as he looked up. ~I... I want to come with you. You have too much hurt in your past. I'm Dramii.~
Ma'Draka kneeled, enough so that he could rest one hand upon his new bond's head. "Thank you," he said, his voice surprisingly quiet. Bonding this duowinged beauty had meant more to him then many people would guess.

The last two dragonets were sitting together, as if in light conversation. One, a blue fellow that was speckled with black, made a cackling noise, then shambled off to the food tables. Bhriibuthat didn't seem to want to bond...
Seizing her chance, Jigsaw bumped his care into the hands of those nice Sotiel siblings that had visited her the other day. Considering that this was probably the last dragonet who would go bondless (the copper male was already sniffing out the candidates), she wanted those Star City natives to take a dragonet into their care. After all, they'd seemed a lot more... humane then some of the sponsors that had visited earlier. She blatantly favored that, of course, and so the blue male was quietly matched up with them.

And the very last dragonet, a smirk spread across his adorable little face, plopped his tail down right in front of the chaos cat, Vis. ~Hey, isn't it cool?!~ the hatchling exclaimed, ~Your name's 'Vis', my name's 'Viis'! What a coincidence! We musta been meant for one another!~ Opening his coppery mouth wide in childish, unrestrained laughter, the dragonet nudged his new bond to the food tables. No waiting around for him!

It had been... an amazingly orderly hatching, for once! A little relieved--perhaps a little disappointed--the audience filtered out of the watching stands, while new riders and care-takers watched over their small charges. And that was the end of that.

A note on these hatchlings: each has a basic genetic chart that will determine the likely colours of offspring. If you need access to this chart for breeding purposes, please email me. These charts will not be available for every clutch.
